Celebrating Unity and Resilience at the Youth Day Commemorative Ride in Khayelitsha

June 16 holds a deep and painful place in South Africa’s history. It marks the day in 1976 when thousands of young students in Soweto protested against the apartheid government’s policy enforcing education in Afrikaans. The peaceful protest turned tragic as police opened fire, killing many students and sparking nationwide resistance. This day is remembered as Youth Day, honoring the courage and sacrifice of those young people who stood up for their rights. In Khayelitsha, more than 80 cyclists gathered to commemorate this day through a special ride that combined remembrance, community, and celebration.

The ride began at Khaltsha Cycles, where participants met early in the morning. Together, they cycled to Site C, Khayelitsha’s first township, to visit a significant development project by Urban Think Tank. This project is transforming the community by constructing dignified housing and a multi-purpose community centre. The visit highlighted the ongoing efforts to improve living conditions and build stronger community spaces. After exploring the development, the cyclists made their way back to the academy, where the day’s events continued with warm soup and live music. The Jam & Ride initiative, led by Khayelitsha Academy in partnership with TUI Foundation, Nguzo Saba Institute, and Khayelitsha Cycles, offers a platform for both established and upcoming musicians to share their talents. This monthly Jam Session brings the community together through music and creativity.
