FROM CAPE TOWN TO QONCE: A JOURNEY OF PURPOSE, PAIN, AND POSSIBILITY

1,135 km. 8 Days. One Mission.

Some journeys change how far you think you can go.

Others change how you see community, leadership, and purpose.

Cape Town → Qonce | ODU Cycle Tour 2026

For 8 unforgettable days, Khaltsha Development Academy joined riders from across South Africa on a demanding 1,135 km cycle tour from Cape Town to Qonce as part of the ODU Cycle Tour 2026.

The mission:

To raise funds towards the development of the Dale College Multipurpose Community Centre — a future space for sport, education, events, and community development in Qonce.

But somewhere between the mountain passes, gravel roads, endless climbs, and quiet moments on the bike, this journey became about much more than cycling.

Uniondale Town | team about to set off on a sunny day.

RIDING THROUGH LANDSCAPES — AND LIMITS

The road carried us through Worcester, Barrydale, Uniondale, Steytlerville, Kleinpoort, Adelaide, and finally Qonce.

Each town welcomed us differently.

Children waved from the roadside.

Drivers hooted in support.

Small communities stopped to ask where we were headed and why we were riding.

And every day, the landscape changed.

The towering mountains of the Western Cape gave way to the open stillness of the Karoo. Long gravel roads stretched endlessly ahead while strong headwinds tested every rider physically and mentally.

There were moments where the ride humbled us.

Days where exhaustion spoke louder than motivation.

But every evening during our team briefings, we reminded one another:

Why we were there.

Who we were riding for.

And why purpose must always be bigger than discomfort.

“Over 10,000 metres of elevation climbed across 8 days.”

IVIWE YAKO: LEADING WITH COURAGE

One of the most powerful parts of this journey was witnessing our cycling coach, Iviwe Yako, become the first of our champions at Khaltsha Development Academy to complete a ride of this magnitude.

Day after day, she pushed through fatigue, climbs, sore legs, wind, and long distances with incredible resilience.

But beyond the physical challenge, Iviwe represented something much bigger.

She represented:

  • Leadership

  • Access

  • Courage

  • Possibility for the next generation of girls in cycling

Her presence on this tour was a reminder that talent exists everywhere — opportunity does not always.

And when young people are given support, mentorship, and belief, incredible things become possible.

THE ARRIVAL IN QONCE

Nothing could prepare us for the emotion of arriving in Qonce.

As we entered town, the streets were lined with support.

Dale Junior learners welcomed riders with cheers, hugs, songs, smiles, and words of encouragement that instantly made every difficult kilometre worth it.

It did not feel like the end of a cycle tour.

It felt like the celebration of a shared dream.

At Khaltsha Development Academy, we believe community organisations should not only wait to be supported — we should also support one another.

This ride reminded us of the power of collective action.

Schools, riders, sponsors, support crews, organisers, communities, and development organisations all came together around one mission:

To build something meaningful for future generations.

Great relationships and partnerships were formed through this experience, and we leave this journey inspired by what becomes possible when people unite around purpose.

THE MISSION CONTINUES

While the ride is complete, the campaign continues.

We invite our community, partners, and supporters to continue contributing towards the development of the Dale College Multipurpose Community Centre.
