Through Their Lens: Empowering Young Voices Through Photography and Storytelling

Every young person holds a unique story shaped by their experiences, surroundings, and dreams. At Khaltsha Cycling Academy, this belief guided a recent initiative that gave young women a new way to share their stories. Over eight days, a group of champions participated in a Photography and Life Skills Programme designed to teach more than just camera techniques. This programme opened doors to self-expression, observation, and confidence-building through the art of photography.

Learning Photography as a Way to See the World

The programme began with foundational lessons on photography basics such as composition, lighting, and framing. But it quickly moved beyond technical skills. The girls learned how to use their cameras as tools to tell stories, capture emotions, and observe details often overlooked. Photography became a way to connect with their environment and reflect on their own perspectives.

Guided by photographer Endinalo Moni and supported by the Dialogue Arts Centre (DAC), the participants explored Cape Town through photography walks. These outings encouraged curiosity and creativity, allowing the girls to experiment with different angles and subjects. They discussed what makes a photograph powerful and how images can communicate complex ideas without words.

Building Confidence Through Creative Expression

As the champions practiced their skills, they also developed life skills like communication, critical thinking, and self-confidence.
