More Than a Ride: Celebrating Mandela Day Together

Sometimes the best conversations don't happen around a boardroom table. They happen while riding side by side.

There was something special about the streets of Khayelitsha on Mandela Day.

Just after sunrise, more than 60 cyclists gathered outside Khaltsha Cycles. Some were regulars. Others were visiting Khayelitsha for the very first time. We greeted familiar faces, welcomed new ones, and before long, we were all riding together.

For the next couple of hours, bicycles replaced cars as we made our way through some of the township's most important streets and neighbourhoods. It wasn't about speed or distance. It was about seeing Khayelitsha differently.

As we rode, conversations flowed naturally. We spoke about the incredible entrepreneurs building businesses in our community, the importance of safer streets for cyclists and pedestrians, and how collaboration between communities, organisations and businesses can unlock opportunities for everyone.

That's what we love most about Jam & Ride.

It's never just about the bicycle.

It's about creating space for people to connect, listen and learn from one another.

Back at Khaltsha Cycles, the bicycles were parked, but the conversations continued.

The afternoon came alive with an intimate listening session from Judah, featuring the soulful sounds of DeepSoul—artists whose music continues to tell the story of Khayelitsha with honesty and heart. As Judah prepares for his live show at Isivivana this August, it was a privilege to hear new music in such a welcoming community space.

Moments like these remind us that strong communities aren't built through programmes alone. They're built when people spend time together, share ideas, celebrate local talent and begin to see one another as neighbours rather than strangers.

We're incredibly grateful to our partners, TUI Foundation and Nguzo Saba Institute, whose support continues to make Jam & Ride possible.

And to everyone who joined us on Mandela Day—thank you.

You reminded us that honouring Madiba's legacy isn't only about giving 67 minutes of our time. It's about creating the kind of communities he believed in: communities where people come together, support one another and imagine a better future.

We'll be back on our bicycles next month, and we'd love you to join us.

Because every ride is another opportunity to discover the spirit of Khayelitsha—one conversation, one song, and one pedal stroke at a time.
