This year, two young ladies from Khayelitsha are proving that dreams really can go the distance — all the way from the dusty township streets to the towering peaks of the French Alps.
At just 19 years old, Sesethu Jikeka and Ngcali Simelela, members of the Khaltsha Cycling Academy, became the first young female cyclists from their community to take on Europe’s elite cycling scene — a journey made possible through the support of the BetwayCares Foundation.
Their story is more than a cycling milestone — it’s a story of courage, opportunity, and what happens when potential meets purpose.
A Journey That Changed Everything
Since joining Khaltsha Cycling Academy in 2022, Sesethu and Ngcali have shown incredible determination. But earlier this year, their lives took a dramatic turn when BetwayCares opened the door to a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity — a cycling exchange in France and Spain. In France, they witnessed the world’s top female riders at the Tour de France Femmes avec Zwift, learning firsthand what it takes to compete at the highest level. They even conquered the legendary climbs of the French Alps during Tour de France Femme, one of cycling’s toughest challenges. In Spain, they trained under Ashleigh Moolman Pasio at the Rocacorba Collective, one of the most respected cycling communities in Europe.

Back Home, The Movement Grows
Since returning to Khayelitsha, the two have become role models to over 100 young riders training at the Khaltsha Cycling Academy.
- 36 riders and 8 elite team cyclists now benefit from improved training inspired by their European experience.
- Sesethu is working towards her - bike mechanic certification, ensuring more girls can access technical skills in cycling.
- Ngcali is mentoring young girls who now believe that their dreams can reach just as high.
Their journey has sparked a new wave of belief in what’s possible — especially for young women in sport.

BetwayCares: Powering Dreams into Motion
The BetwayCares Foundation didn’t just sponsor a trip — they’re building a legacy.
- Access: Opened doors for young South African cyclists to experience global competition.
- Mentorship: Connected township talent with world-class coaching.
- Legacy: Laid the foundation for an annual Khaltsha–Betway European Exchange Programme.
What’s Next
With eyes on the 2026 SA National Championships, Sesethu and Ngcali are training harder than ever. Plans are also underway to launch a Community Bicycle Shop — creating jobs and helping sustain cycling in Khayelitsha.
