Finding a proper place to work sounds simple until you really need one.
As entrepreneurs, we know that feeling well. Home can be noisy, cramped, distracting, or simply too full of life to let you focus. A coffee shop can help for an hour, but it is not always the right place to take a serious call, meet a client, spread out your thoughts, or build something that needs your full attention.
Sometimes you need more than a chair and a plug point. You need a space that says, “You can take your work seriously here.”

In a sense, we designed it a little selfishly. We wanted to create the kind of workspace we would want to use ourselves. A place that feels practical, welcoming, grounded in community, and built for people who are trying to make something happen.
The idea started with a real need
Khaltsha Hub is being launched by Khaltsha Development Academy in Khayelitsha, South Africa. It is a new community workspace for entrepreneurs, freelancers, remote workers, small businesses, creatives, and community organisations.
But the idea did not come from a boardroom plan or a trend report. It came from lived experience.
Anyone who has tried to start or grow something knows that the work often happens in less-than-perfect places. Around kitchen tables. In bedrooms. In taxis between appointments. On phones when there is no quiet corner available. In coffee shops where the Wi-Fi drops, the noise rises, and you feel guilty for taking up space too long.
There is dignity in doing what you can with what you have. Many strong ideas begin in difficult conditions. But that does not mean people should have to build alone, unsupported, or without access to a proper space.
Khaltsha Hub is our response to that reality.

A space rooted in the work of the Academy
To understand Khaltsha Hub, it helps to understand the bigger story of Khaltsha Development Academy.
The Academy was created to open pathways for young people through development, education, skills, and community-focused programmes. Its work has always been about possibility. It asks a simple but powerful question: what can happen when young people and communities have access to the right support, the right environment, and the right opportunities?
Khaltsha Hub is part of the Academy’s next chapter.
It uses an existing space in a more intentional way. Instead of letting that space sit underused, the Academy is shaping it into something that can serve entrepreneurs, creatives, workers, organisers, and builders in the wider community.
At the same time, the Hub creates earned income that can contribute to the long-term sustainability of the Academy. That matters. Community organisations often carry deep purpose, but purpose also needs resources. By creating a workspace that people value and use, Khaltsha Development Academy can strengthen its own foundation while continuing to invest in the programmes and people it exists to serve.
This is one of the most exciting parts of the idea. The Hub is not separate from the Academy’s mission. It grows from it.

Why Khayelitsha needs spaces like this

Instead of guessing, the team wants to learn with the community.
This approach feels right because Khaltsha Hub is being built for real people with real needs. The best way to shape it is with the people who will use it. The Founding Phase gives the Hub room to grow carefully before moving into full operations.
