More Than Learning to Ride: Why We Teach Adults to Cycle

It's never too late to learn. It's never too late to believe in yourself.

When most people think about learning to ride a bicycle, they picture childhood.

They imagine scraped knees, supportive parents running alongside them, and that unforgettable moment when the training wheels finally come off.

But for many adults, that moment never came.

Not because they didn't want it to.

Life simply got in the way.

For some, there wasn't a bicycle at home. Others grew up in communities where cycling wasn't part of everyday life. Some never had someone willing to patiently teach them. As the years passed, what began as "I'll learn one day" slowly became "Maybe it's too late."

At the Khaltsha Development Academy, we've learned that this story is more common than people think.

That's why our Learn2Cycle programme exists.

Because learning to ride a bicycle isn't just about riding a bicycle.

It's about giving someone permission to believe that they're still capable of learning something new.

Fear Looks Different as an Adult

Teaching adults is very different from teaching children.

Children usually fall, laugh, get back up and try again.

Adults carry something much heavier.

They carry embarrassment.

Many arrive quietly admitting they've never learned to ride. Some apologise before they even begin. Others are afraid of falling—not only onto the ground, but in front of other people.

We've learned that before we teach balance, we first have to build trust.

Before we teach pedalling, we help people believe they belong.

The bicycle simply becomes the tool.

The real lesson is confidence.

Zanele's Journey

Recently, we had the privilege of meeting Zanele, who joined our Learn2Cycle programme with the same mixture of excitement and uncertainty that so many adults bring with them.

Over time, we watched fear slowly give way to determination.

Small victories became bigger ones.

Every metre she rode was about much more than balance—it was about believing she could do something she once thought was beyond her.

Her journey beautifully reminds us why this programme matters.

We're incredibly grateful to Radio Workshop and Daily Maverick for taking the time to tell Zanele's story with such care and honesty.

The Journey Continues

Every person who joins our Learn2Cycle programme arrives with a different story.

Some want to commute to work.

Some want to ride with their children.

Some have always dreamed of cycling but never had the opportunity.

Whatever brings them to us, they all leave with something more than they expected.

Not simply because they learned to ride.

But because they discovered that growth has no age limit.

If you've ever thought, "I wish I'd learned to ride," we'd love to meet you.

Your first lesson might be the beginning of something much bigger than a bicycle.
