A Tale of Grit and Determination
The FNB Wines2Whales Mountain Bike Race is known for its breathtaking trails, fierce climbs, and the camaraderie that binds riders together. This year, one of our very own, Iviwe Yako, took on the challenge for the second time, partnering with the determined Ria Wagner. Reflecting on her journey, Iviwe shared how this year felt vastly different from her first attempt. With more support from the cycling community, her coach Sindile Mavundla, and the girls she leads in our academy program, she felt a stronger sense of belonging and motivation.
Overcoming Challenges
The race wasn’t without its challenges. On the very first stage, Iviwe suffered a crash that nearly sidelined her with a serious arm injury. Thankfully, no bones were broken, and her resilience shone through. Though she couldn’t finish that stage, she refused to let the setback define her race. Mid-race, emotions ran high—fatigue, frustration, and determination collided—but Iviwe kept pushing forward, fueled by the thought of the young girls she trains as the cycling program lead. She didn’t want to let them down, nor her partner Ria, who stood by her side every pedal of the way.

A Triumph of Spirit
Despite the rocky start, Iviwe completed the remaining stages with strength and joy. She described the experience as “mixed emotions,” but ultimately, it was a triumph of spirit. Her ability to bounce back and finish strong is a testament to her grit, leadership, and passion for cycling. For Iviwe, Wines2Whales wasn’t just about crossing the finish line—it was about proving to herself and to the girls she mentors that perseverance matters. Her journey reminds us that setbacks are temporary, but resilience lasts forever.
